Asylum seekers may be scared to disclose their HIV status as they may feel it will influence their asylum claim. Some asylum seekers living with HIV may also have several other medical conditions that not only affect their health but also detrimentally affect the effectiveness of HIV-related treatment and medications. It is critical that all conditions (i.e., tuberculosis, hepatitis, diabetes etc) as well as HIV are diagnosed as soon as possible. Given the complicated treatment regimens, it is critical that refugees and asylum seekers living with HIV/AIDS have access to care with professionals who are knowledgeable about HIV and provide specialize care. It is imperative that health workers use a professional interpreter if their patient does not speak English (a family member is not acceptable). Some clients may need access to sex education materials.
