The BMA have produced some guidelines for health professionals. The article looks at the prevalence of the practice as well as practical advise for doctors including advice on children. Updated Feb 2004.

The Foundation for Women's Health Research and Development (FORWARD)
FORWARD has many years experience in working with FGM at the national level, it places the issue of FGM within the UK context and provides health, education and social work professionals with a culturally sensitive framework for action. They offer protocols and guidelines for these professionals to increase their awareness and to develop best practice models.
Workshops, conferences and meetings are held by FORWARD to discuss issues, problems, solutions, innovative ideas and evolving best practice models relating to FGM in the UK.

Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003
The Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985 makes female genital mutilation (FGM) an offence, except on specific physical and mental health grounds.
This Act is being replaced by the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003, which was brought into force in March 2004.
