Amnesty International statement on detention of asylum seekers in Australia, 4 May 2002.

 

There are also major concerns about how the detention system affects the mental and physical health of the detainees. There is a growing body of evidence that prolonged detention of unspecified duration, particularly when people are already traumatised by past persecution and do not know what the future holds for them, can lead to serious, physical and psychological damage.

Migrant and Refugee Communties Forum and CVS Consultants:

The mental health of refugees and newly arrived communities.

 

A detailed report. The project was commissioned by the Department of Health as one of a series of exercises intended to investigate and offer general guidance on different aspects of ethnicity and health. It cover a wide range of issues including Pathways to Care, the role of refugee communities and individuals, cultural considerations outreach, health awareness and prevention strategies, practical support, assessment arrangements, children and young people, bicultural and transcultural counselling.
